NAB 2018 Day Two

Second Day at NAB 2018

The NAB Show 2018 is well and truly underway! One of the big announcements has been Atamos support for the two recording formats from Apple and ProRes RAW HQ. They are both 12 bit recording formats with greatly reduced bit rates where the ProRes RAW has similar data rates to ProRes 422HQ and ProRes RAW HQ is similar to ProRes 4444XQ. In fact the concept and data rates are similar to Sony's XOCN, but XOCN is 16 bit. These new formats retain the quality of the RAW recording but can go straight to edit. Atamos are supporting both versions of ProRes RAW in their devices and soon DJI will include on some of theirs. With the increase in smaller cameras outputting RAW the Atamos recorders  will increase the recording quality at reduced data rates allowing HDR to be achievable easily. Of interest but probably something none of us will ever use, the new Phantom v2640 was on show recording 12000 frames per second at 2K resolution. It can record 10 seconds of data, so with a bit of number crunching, if you replayed the 10 second burst back at 25 fps it would take an hour and twenty minutes! Wow! They also hinted at a lower resolution but significantly higher frame rate camera later this year! 12G is abundant at the show and this makes 4K HFR easier to move around. It will be interesting to see if this overtakes IP. Canon have added a 20mm T1.5 to it's CN-E Prime Lenses giving people an option between the 14mm T3.1 and 24mm T1.5. Complaints that the 14mm wasn't quick enough seem to have prompted this move.   Check back tomorrow for day three!
