Sony at IBC 2019 - Past Launches and Rumours

The rumour mill is at full tilt for IBC 2019 with many speculating what Sony might announce. A full frame FS7, a replacement for the F55, a baby Venice? Perhaps they are introducing successors to all 3? With a habit of introducing exciting new kit at IBC, we look back at some of Sony’s biggest reveals.

IBC 2011

Sony F65 Super 35mm 8K Camera with HDVF-C30WR Viewfinder

IBC 2011 saw Sony launching the F65, a cheaper but much more impressive successor to the F35. The F65 was Sony’s move against the then aggressively priced RED Epic and ARRI Alexa. Both were welcomed by DOPs at very competitive price points. But Sony’s F65 quickly left their competition behind with more features to shout about.

IBC 2014

At IBC 2014 Sony Introduced the PXW-FS7, an addition to their XDCAM line. An E-mount Super 35mm camera with ergonomically rounded edges, it was a perfect fit for documentary and verité-style shooters. The Sony PXW-FS7 is still very popular and since its initial release, Sony brought out a Mark 2 version.

IBC 2017

Sony VENICE CineAlta Full-Frame 35mm 6K Camera

2 years ago, at IBC 2017 Sony offered attendees a first look at the Sony Venice. This reveal was a big one for Sony. They not only abandoned their usual product code names, but finally delivered a much requested full-frame sensor. A 6K cinema camera intended for the creative market, it has gone on to be used in a variety of Netflix films. Currently James Cameron is filming on it for Avatar 2.

It is clear Sony likes making big announcements at IBC and we are most certainly due for a new product. Word on the street has it we might even get some news from Sony before IBC 2019 starts.
