Wedding Videography Equipment | Essential Kit

With many wedding videographers just starting out, it can be confusing what equipment is essential to film a good wedding video. We decided to give you a quick round-up of what we think will help you create the perfect wedding shoot and what brands are worth investing in

Cameras

Sony Alpha A-7S

No wedding videography kit is complete without it. Getting a good camera is important when wanting to get far in the industry. So, which camera to buy? Sony offers a great range of lightweight cameras that will perform great in low-light while the SonyA7RII’s CMOS sensor creates perfectly clear images. Canon EOS cameras are favoured by many wedding videographers too with the C200 and C300 Mark II having long life batteries, ergonomic use and a dual SD card slot.

Lenses

Canon CN-E Prime Lens 20 mm

A good lens is vital to capturing everything from jolly group shots to more intimate moments at a wedding. 35mm – 50mm lenses are great for capturing most of the wedding, including bridal parties getting the bride ready and groomsmen goofing off together. Canon lenses such as the Canon EF 16-35mm & Canon CN-E 50mm create sharp images with minimal blur. Zeiss offers a slightly cheaper variant with a lot of the same benefits with the Zeiss 50mm.

Stabilizers

Having a good tripod is useful for filming big group shots and speeches. But as you are likely going to be working in tight spaces, monopods like Manfrotto’s Video Monopod give you more flexibility. They are great for staying nimble and ensures you don’t disrupt the wedding. Handheld kits are a great way to get more stable shots when moving around dinner tables and during reception. In the end, you will want to of course adapt your wedding videography kit to the type of weddings and wedding spaces you work on.

Audio & Sound

Good recording equipment is essential for wedding videography. Capturing speeches and well wishes of guests is an important aspect of wedding videography. They help make a video more sentimental and personal. When relying on sound for videography, in-camera microphones are great but not perfect. Investing in the RØDE VideoMic Pro for example as an on-camera mic is a straightforward way to record quality audio. It is better for recording more minutiae sounds than your average onboard camera mic without interference from weather conditions such as wind. Zoom microphones are also great for capturing clear audio of wedding speeches but might be subject to your budget and something to invest slightly later in your career.

Lighting

F&V Z180S Bi-Colour LED Video Light

You will not need to set up expensive lighting for wedding shoots. Using an LED such as the Manfrotto Lumimuse are great for lighting portrait and short soundbites of people. They are also very portable and easy to carry in your kit bag.

These are some of the more essential kit for wedding videography for high-quality results. We could add more things such SD card recommendations and what batteries you want to take, but these become more specific depending on your kit. Be sure to let us know what your suggestions are on social media and questions you may have about kit.
