Q1: What’s the best thing you’ve ever watched?
I’m seeing films all the time now which are really brilliant. Great stories, acting and beautiful cinematography, but I still really like the Battle of Algiers. Made in 1966, for me it was way ahead of it’s time in that genre.
Q2. Who was your idol when you were growing up or who is your idol now?
Keith Richards when I was a kid. Now I really admire the work of Roger Deakins and Seamus Mc Garvey
Q3. What was the first camera you ever bought or used?
At the time I couldn’t make my mind up so I bought a Fender Stratocaster instead.
Q4. What is your favourite camera and why?
At the moment, I really loving the Sony F5
Q5. What’s the most bizarre/funniest/favourite thing to happen whilst on a shoot?
I’m afraid the list is too long to include. I’ve been left behind at Somali airstrips, gone missing in various darker parts of the planet and I’m sure like many of us had to make many a hasty exit. Good to laugh about it all afterwards, not really much fun at the time.
Q6. What’s your favourite or worst place to film and why?
I think Afghanistan is my favourite and worst place all rolled into one !
Q7. Who is the most interesting person you have worked with?
Impossible to narrow down, but I’m inspired by the countless individuals who strive against adversity to make other people’s lives better.Especially in a world where we hear so much spin and negativity.
Q8. Name one unnecessary item that you cannot do without on a shoot?
I don’t have room for any unnecessary items. I can barely fit the necessary into the peli cases
Q9. What would you like to film that you haven’t already?
The Godfather 4 !
Q10. What job would you be doing if you couldn’t do what you do now?
Apart from trying to get into this job,I’d probably be doing something with music.
Q11. What’s one piece of advice you would give to an aspiring Cameraman?
Keep your eyes open, watch the light, make it work for you.Never stop learning and a little politeness goes a long way.
