PMW F5 / F55 or the Amira. The Weighty Question
Posted by Amy Whitfield on 30th Jan 2014
As we approach D Day for the Amira, Arri have announced they will reduce it’s weight by 1Kg. Now, what do you put into a camera that you don’t need that weighs 1Kg? Ok, maybe me being a bit picky, but a mean feet if you can do it.
Now the entry level Amira with VF, shoulder pad and viewfinder weighs about 6.8Kg in PL configuration and it’s indicated to cost about 27.5K Euro with PL mount & V Lock.
Let’s assume it’s equivalent is actually the PMW-F5 as it won’t do 4K on-board and doesn’t have a global shutter. The Amira has 100fps against the F5s 120fps unless you spend the extra 3,300 Euro to go to 200fps, the F5 has a 4K sensor against the Amira’s 2K.
So PMW-F5 with OLED Viewfinder and Vocas Shoulder pad currently comes in at £11,950* and 4.4Kg.
(*Using Sony’s trade in offer of £1685.00 available until end of March 2014)
So, about £11K and 2.4Kg difference. For Reference, a Fujinon Cabrio 19 -90 costs £22.5K and weighs 2.7Kg. So £11.5K and 300g gets you a 4K PL Zoom if you go with the F5 instead of the Amira. If the Amira attends the rapid weight loss camp it’s £11.5K and 1.3Kg which you’ll still struggle to find a 4K 19 to 90mm zoom for £11.5K.
V3.0 Software on the F5 and F55 has given 2K Frame Crop on the sensor which allow you to effectively double the focal length of a Super 35mm Lens, giving the Cabrio 180mm at the long end which is equivalent to ( actually a bit longer ) than the Tele end of a 2/3" Wide Angle Zoom. The Amira as we understand it is only delivering initially with PL mount. Great if you have PL mount lenses but a bit of a problem if you want to use EFs. B4s you can use an IBE like you would on the Sony, but that wasn’t the point!
Cfast Cards have come out the same price as SxS Pro + Cards. At least on the F Cameras you can use the cheap SxS if you only want to record 50mb/s!
As ever, I’m a Sony dealer and I’m going to promote the Sony cameras; but I’m very mindful of the Top Gear episode where they compare the Audi R8, the Maclaren and the Ferrari . The Audi won out easily in the tests, the Maclaren was second, the Ferrari last. Which one would they pick? The Ferrari, because? It’s a Ferrari ! But in a business situation would it be right to let your heart rule your head? The F Cameras are here now and have been in the field for a year. 4k is coming whether you like it or not, why buy a 2K camera? An expensive one at that!
With the two dealers who have chosen to sell the Amira having large rental arms. What’s that going to do to the day rate?
