Sony BURANO: A Compact Full-Frame Cinema Camera for Every Filmmaker

Sony has announced the BURANO, a new full-frame 8K cinema camera that blends the incredible image quality and build quality of Sony's Venice cameras with a more portable form factor. The BURANO is not just perfect for large production companies and cinematographers, but also for owner-operators seeking top performance from their camera.

At the heart of the BURANO lies its new full-frame 8.6K sensor, which can capture an impressive 16 stops of dynamic range with low noise. The sensor also supports dual base ISO settings at 800 and 3200, as well as similar colour reproduction to the Venice 2.

The BURANO offers flexibility in shooting modes, allowing you to switch between full-frame and super 35 crop modes. In full-frame mode, the camera can record in 8.6K (17:9 / 16:9) at up to 30 frames per second or 6K at up to 60 frames per second. Switch to super 35 cropped mode, and you can record in 4K at up to 120 frames per second.

The BURANO uses the X-OCN LT codec from the Venice Camera, providing maximum flexibility in post-production. X-OCN is Sony's lightweight 16-bit raw codec, offering incredible colour reproduction with manageable file sizes. Also available to choose are the XAVC and new XAVC-H codecs. XAVC-H is twice as efficient as the XAVC codec with a High, Mid, and Low quality mode to choose from.

The BURANO incorporates features seen in Sony's Alpha and FX series cameras, including fast hybrid autofocus and in-body image stabilization. The fast hybrid autofocus system includes touch operation support and boasts an impressive 627 phase detection autofocus points. Additionally, the in-body image stabilization provides stabilization for PL lenses and compatible E-mount lenses.

The BURANO is a versatile and powerful cinema camera that is sure to appeal to a wide range of filmmakers. Whether you are shooting documentaries, live productions, or independent films, the BURANO is ready to deliver.
