Fujinon Premista 19-45mm T2.9 - PL. FUJIFILM Corporation is pleased to announce the development of the wide-angle zoom lens FUJINON Premista 19-45mm T2.9 (Premista 19-45mm). Offering Cinematographers focal lengths between 19 and 45mm, this will be the third model to join the Premista series of zoom lenses for cinema cameras that support large format sensors*1 and film. Just like the Premista 28-100mm and Premista 80-250mm lenses, this lens produces images with natural and beautiful bokeh, outstanding high resolution, accurate color rendition, and controllable flare with minimal ghosting for capturing high dynamic range. The Premista 19-45mm shows very little distortion

*2 throughout the entire zoom range, lightening the burden of correcting footage after shooting and allowing high quality cinematic images to be created more efficiently. The Premista 19-45mm is scheduled for release in early 2021.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the usage of cinema cameras equipped with large format sensors for feature film and high-end TV production. While prime lenses are regularly used with large format sensors, there is a growing demand for zoom lenses which have the ability to efficiently capture images without the hassle of having to frequently change lenses. These zoom lenses need to match the quality and “look” of the regularly used prime lenses and not be visually compromised in any way.

In response to this demand, at the end of 2019 Fujifilm released a standard 28-100mm and telephoto 80-250mm zoom lens as the first part of the Premista series of cinema zoom lenses. The series has been praised by cinematographers for its amazing performance and wide range of focal lengths.

The newly developed Premista 19-45mm is a wide-angle zoom lens that covers focal lengths from 19mm to 45mm with a constant T-stop of 2.9*3. Featuring large-diameter aspherical lens elements and a unique zooming system, the lens achieves an astonishing level of edge-to-edge sharpness. Additionally, the distortion minimal throughout the entire zoom range, even at the widest focal lengths.

A compact 230mm / 9” length and 3.3kg / 7lb 4oz weight, accomplished through world-class mechanical design cultivated over many years, means that this new zoom lens can be utilized for handheld shooting using a Steadicam*4 or other stabilizing system, as well as high-angle shooting using a crane. Combined with its wide-angle focal lengths and low distortion, the Premista 19-45mm will give cinematographers the ability to add a new perspective to their filmmaking while still minimizing the down time usually spent changing focal lengths.

Like the other lenses in the Premista series, the new Premista 19-45mm supports both “ZEISS eXtended Data” and “Cooke /i® technology” which allow lens metadata*5 to be recorded during shooting, supporting efficient video production.

The Premista 19-45mm will join the existing Premista 28-100 and Premista 80-250 in early 2021 to provide series of perfectly matched zoom lenses that cover focal lengths from 19mm to 200m at T2.9, and then up to 250mm at T3.5. Fujifilm has led the cinema industry since its foundation in 1934 to achieve domestic production of photographic and motion picture films in Japan. The company’s products are widely praised by cinematographers around the world, including the development of high-performance zoom cinema lenses winning the Emmy Award by the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2017. Fujifilm will continue to tap into optical, high precision forming and assembling technologies that have been nurtured in the field of cutting-edge video production to develop a wide range of lenses, thereby addressing the diverse needs.

*1 Large image sensors that measure 43.2-46.3mm diagonally. Sensor is larger than the super 35mm sensor, which is the standard format for cinema cameras.

*2 Image distortion that tends to occur when shooting at wide-angle focal lengths.

*3 An index stating the brightness of the lens, taking into account the F value and transmittance. The smaller the value, the greater amount of light the lens transmits.

*4 Equipment for shooting stable video, which reduces unwanted movement that can occur when shooting handheld video.*5 Information such as focus, zoom and iris position.

Spherical zoom lens for shooting large format images with outstanding high resolution, natural and beautiful bokeh and neutral, accurate colour tone

  • The new Premista 19-45mm lens combines large-diameter aspherical lens elements, polished to ultimate precision, with Fujifilm’s unique zooming system to deliver superior resolution by effectively correcting issues such as chromatic aberration, achieving impressive quality and clarity.
  • It produces an image circle with 46.3mm diameter, supporting all current large format sensors and film.
  • The Premista 19-45mm has been designed to show minimal distortion even when shooting at wide-angle focal lengths.
  • A 13-blade design forms a near-perfect circular aperture which produces natural and beautiful bokeh.
  • Cutting edge optical design and Fujifilm’s unique coating process have been adopted to minimise ghosts and control flares to maintain good contrast to maximise the dynamic range of light being captured by the camera.
  • Fujifilm’s unique coatings also maintain a neutral cinematic colour tone that matches perfectly with other Premista, Premier and Cabrio lenses, and is very close to many high-end large format prime lenses.

Wide-angle zoom covering focal lengths from 19mm to 45mm

  • The new Premista 19-45mm lens is a wide-angle zoom lens with a largest T-stop value of 2.9 throughout its entire focal length range of 19mm to 45mm. This lens covers the focal lengths of five prime lenses*6, reducing the need to change lenses and allowing more effective shooting in a shorter amount of time.
  • *6 Five prime lenses for cinema cameras with focal lengths of 21mm, 25mm, 29mm, 35mm, and 40mm that support large format sensors.

Compact design with excellent robustness

  • Fujifilm’s lens design simulation technology is coupled with decades of production technology for assembling high precision optics to produce a compact and lightweight body with excellent robustness to withstand harsh filming conditions. The Premista 19-45mm is 25mm shorter length and 500g lighter in weight than the other two Premista lenses.

Excellent and comfortable operability

  • The Premista 19-45mm lens shares the same front diameter and gear position for the focus, zoom and iris operating rings as the other Premista lenses. The same matte box, follow-focus system, and other accessories can be used without the need to re-adjust their positions when changing between Premista lenses.
  • The Premista 19-45mm features a Back Focus adjustment function*7 that allows the lens to have its flange focal distance adjusted on location to correct shifts caused by rapid temperature changes.
  • The focus ring has a full rotation of 280 degrees and provides smooth torque to enable precise focusing. Fluorescent paint is applied to index marks on the focus, zoom and iris rings so that these settings can be visibly checked even at night or in a dark room.
  • *7 This function can adjust the lens’s image-forming plane to the optimum position according to each camera’s flange focal distance (the distance from the lens’s mounting reference plane to the image sensor).

Supporting ZEISS eXtended Data*8

  • The new Premista 19-45mm supports “ZEISS eXtended Data”, developed by Carl Zeiss in compliance with the “/i® Technology*9” communication standard. Lens metadata provides many practical benefits on set such as aiding the focus puller or improving the quality of any pre-visual effects, recorded lens metadata can be used to correct lens distortion and peripheral light fall-off*10.
  • *8 ZEISS eXtended Data is to be introduced with a firmware update.
  • *9 /i is a trademark or registered trademark of Cooke Optics Limited.
  • *10 Separate compatible devices are required depending on the camera used.
