NAB 2018 New Products Announced

NAB 2018 New Products  - Mike Thomas

NAB is over for another year and so here are my top new products that were announced.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features 4/3 size sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO. It could be me but I can’t actually see what these dual native ISOs are! Up to ISO of 25,600 for HDR images and incredible low light performance. External controls give quick access to essential functions, while the large 5 inch touchscreen makes it easy to frame shots, focus accurately and change camera settings. Features include built in SD/UHS-II or CFast 2.0 recorders for RAW or ProRes recoding as well as a USB-C expansion port for recording externally to disks, plus MFT lens mount, built-in microphones and a mono loud speaker, a single XLR audio input on the side, full sized HDMI which is a blessing or a curse, not sure! 3D LUT support, Bluetooth and more. Capable of 60fps in 4K mode or 120fps in a cropped HD mode.

PXW-FS5 II

Fundamentally the PXW-FS5 with two options permanently installed and the addition of 9 Picture Profiles. Sony reported this as they've taken all they learnt with the Venice and put it in the FS5. People translated this as you can make the FS5 look like a Venice. Obviously, apart from the different sensor size, different pixel count, different type of sensor, different pixel pitch and different processing! Raw output and HFR are the options that now become standard and the price remains the same. The original FS5 will still be available at a reduced price.

PXW-Z190

Sony's PXW-Z190 is a 4K compact camcorder with three 1/3-type Exmor R CMOS image sensors delivering 4K 50p/60p with 4:2:2 10-bit recording on SD Card in XAVC, DV-Cam and MPEG HD (option). In addition proxy recordings can be made alongside the main recording up to 9mpbs. The new model incorporates a 25x optical zoom lens to cover a wide focal range for multiple shooting requirements, with three independent lens rings to support intuitive operation. Using optical zoom lens with Digital Extender in an HD mode producing a 50x zoom equivalent image. Advanced Face Detection Auto FOcus (AF) features include the 'Face Priority AF' and newly added 'Face Only AF', which help to ensure a specific person within a group automatically stays in pin-sharp focus. Sony's Electronic Variable ND filter ensures greater exposure control bby smoothly varying the density of the ND filter during shooting while maintaining resolution and depth of field. Dual MI shoes enable the use of a wireless microphone and video light at the same time to achieve further flexibility. WHen using Son'ys UWP-D series wireless microphne, audio signals can be delivered without cabling - eliminating the risk of accidental disconnection and battery loss of the wireless audio receiver. Enhanced 4-channel audio recording is supported by a combination of 2 XLR inputs and audio input via an MI shoe. The new PXW-Z190 camcorder will price around £2,300.00 + VAT List. More here >>

PXW-Z280

For the Z280, read 190 on steroids. Firstly 1/2" chips instead of 1/3" so a shallower depth of field and a 17x zoom instead of 20x. The option formats of the 190 are standard plus XAVC-I. Output includes 12G SDI. Recording is to SxS. The real fun starts with dual cellular connectivity which is two cellular data connections for uplink for streaming enabling high quality. OLED VF. 4 Channel audio control. Priced around £6,200.00 + VAT it will be cheaper than the PXW-X200. More here >> Not forgetting the Canon EOS C700 FF released before NAB.
